Chevin Housing

Leading paint brand Johnstone’s has strengthened its already successful relationship with Yorkshire-based housing group Chevin Housing by providing an extensive range of products for use in the refurbishment of two regional residential schemes.

A selection of products from Johnstone’s interior and exterior product ranges were selected to successfully meet the decorative and practical requirements of the residents at Cardigan Court in Leeds and Halifax Road in Sheffield. At both projects, members of Johnstone’s Technical Advisory Department helped to devise a paint specification that would provide a durable yet attractive solution.

In Sheffield, Johnstone’s create a specification for the decoration and protection of the exterior woodwork on each of the four, three storey blocks of flats at Halifax Road. After contractors Wharfedale Decorations Ltd completed the necessary preparation work, Johnstone’s BBA approved Stormshield Flexible Gloss in white was applied in order to reduce future maintenance costs, Ideally suited to such a task, Johnstone’s Stormshield Flexible Gloss provides a high quality microporous finish that is resistance to blistering, cracking and peeling and offers exterior woodwork in excess of six years’ protection.

Johnstone’s specialist Woodworks range also helped breathe new life into the wooden fencing that encloses the residential properties. Retreated in the shade Forest Green, the fencing has been protected with Johnstone’s Opaque Wood Finish, which is both water repellent and resistant to UV attack.

In Leeds, Johnstone’s Technical Specification Team was tasked with devising a paint specification for the interior refurbishment of the four-storey block at Cardigan Court. As a low-maintenance and durable solution was needed for the redecoration of the communal stairwell and corridors, Johnstone’s suggested the use of products from both its Trade Professional and Advanced Technology ranges.

Johnstone’s CovaPlus Vinyl Matt was specified for use on the ceilings as in addition to boasting excellent opacity and colour retention, the emulsion is also resistant to fading and yellowing.

In order to minimise disruption for residents throughout the redecoration programme, Johnstone’s also suggested the use of its Acrylic Eggshell and Johnstone’s Aqua Gloss products owing to their quick-drying and low odour properties. Johnstone’s Acrylic Eggshell was used on the broad wall areas as its smooth, wipable finish that is both highly durable and resistant to condensation makes it ideally suited for use high traffic areas. Johnstone’s Aqua Gloss was then used on the timber trim and steel staircases to complete the redecoration programme.

Steve O’Hara, Senior Technical Specification Consultant at Johnstone’s, comments; “We worked closely with the Chevin Housing Group to create two detailed specifications that offered advice and guidance on preparation, application and product selection. Johnstone’s extensive range enables us to provide the most appropriate product for both the interior and exterior work and our experience of undertaking contracts in the residential sector helped to ensure that the refurbishment programme was cost effective, of the highest standard and more importantly, caused minimum disruption to the residents.”
