• Where the surface is located – is it interior or exterior?
• What type of surface is it – eg brickwork, metal, plaster, timber
• What condition is the surface in – eg previously painted, weathered, untreated
• What finish you would like – eg matt, silk, gloss
• What type of paint you would like to use – eg water-based or solvent-based
