The colour wheel shows which colours combine well, whether they are tonal, contrasting or harmonious colours.

Tonal colour schemes are created using different tones of the same colour. Adding black or white to the parent colour can change the tone of the colour. Contrasting colours sit opposite each other on the colour wheel. To create an effective contrasting colour scheme, the colours used should not have the same tonal value, i.e. they should not be from the same ring of the colour wheel. Harmonious colour schemes can be created using colours adjacent to each other on the colour wheel. To create an effective harmonious scheme the colours used should not be of the same tonal value, i.e. parent colours should not be next to each other on the colour wheel but the shades chosen should be varied (e.g. purple and dark blue) |
